Leviathan and the Air Pump Redux: The Case for String Theory

In this talk I argue that the dominance of string theory in the research landscape of physics can be justified in a variety of ways. Here I focus on an argument similar to Hilary Putnam's 'no miracles argument' that, I claim, many string theorists in fact espouse.
