Treatment of the modes occurs in chap. 9, which is copiously illustrated with polyphonic examples, several of which have different modal designations for tenor and bass. One example contains the initial formulas of all eight modes; it occurs in the section `Von dreierley erkentnis der Tonorum' (fol. e2r) that treats the recognition of the modes from beginning (initial motive), middle (ambitus and repercussion) and end (final). The importance of melodic formulas is also attested by the inclusion of 3 psalm tone cycles.

The 8 plainchant modes ('tuoni ecclesiastici') are discussed on pp. 68-88 with a cycle of 2-part examples through the polyphonic psalm tones or psalm-tone keys (Powers 1980, p. 416). Book 1 already appeared in 1549 under the same title; it is considerably altered in the present edition. The discussion of modes is partly an elaboration of that in Bermudo 1550. Information about the 8 modes occurs in books 2-5, and goes often into considerable detail. Bermudo's approach is pseudo-classical, but of the ambitus types only mixture and commixture are fully elaborated (chap. iv:40). Plainchant modality is discussed in chaps. ii:14 and iii:14-18. Polyphonic modality occurs first in ch. ii:28, stating that beginning harpsichordists need only know modes 1, 4, 6 and 8 (a cyclus employing these modes only appears at the end of book 4). This knowledge apparently suffices for transposition (treated in chap. ii:29). In chap. iv:14, Bermudo attacks `algunos barbaros tañedores' who corrupt the mode by playing superfluous sharps and flats. Chaps. iv:18-40 give a full treatment for the organist in particular, discussing beginning, middle and end of the composition, and the 8 modes separately. Much attention is paid to change of mode, which includes transposition (there are 3 4-voice examples of rather far transpositions of modes), change of clef and signature (which changes the scale) and change of signature only (chaps. iv:36-40). Book 5 on composition contains information about the role of the modes (chaps. v:1-9, 15).

The Letter to the Reader says that the book was written for private use, a number of years before publication. There is a long list of authorities immediately preceding the main text. The author discusses the 12 modes of polyphony in chaps. ii:15-20, using Glarean's system and referring to Artusi 1598 and Zarlino 1558 as his sources. The 8-mode system is rejected for polyphony (ii:19), but it is used for plainchant (ii:21). In polyphony, only 7 modes are employed regularly (ii:17). The modes are also mentioned in chap. ii:6, where Bononcini recommends a sparing use of cadences outside the mode; and in chap. ii:10 on fugue and imitation. Here some examples are modally labelled; further, this chapter mentions authentic and plagal fugues, that is, with an ascending and a descending subject respectively.

Completed in Naples, 1608. There are many borrowings from other texts; many sources are listed at the end of book 2. The eight plainchant modes are discussed in book 3 and 5; the conventional 12-mode system is applied to polyphonic composition in book 16 (pp. 873-935), but Zarlino's renumbering is also discussed (p. 932). The main sources of book 16 are Pontio 1588 and Zarlino 1558, but with many additions. Book 16 contains two cycles (after Pontio) and mentions c. 100 compositions. There are some remarks on polyphonic modality in other books as well, notably book 12.

Book 3 and 4 contain some remarks on polyphonic application of the modes, with several short examples.

Probably written in Nuremberg. The prologue to the youth of that city already asserts the importance of the modes for polyphonic composition. The chapter on the modes (fols. d1r-f1v), while belonging to part 1 on plainchant, opens with a similar statement; it further describes the finals, transpositions and reciting notes. In addition to the psalm tone, a number of canons are printed for each mode. In part 2 on polyphony, one counterpoint example carries a modal designation (fol. k3v). The composer must observe the modes in polyphony, particularly in the tenor (fol. m4r).

The order is Zarlino's new one, beginning on C, but Glarean's names are retained. Modes are formed by a double division of the octave, and the regular cadences are on the three main notes, final, third and fifth. All this appears to derive from Calvisius's writings. Cadences are further discussed in chap. 15, with 20 4-part examples as illustrations. Chap. 16 mentions the observation of mode in imitation.

Dedication signed in Gubbio, 25 March 1610, which seems to contradict the date on the title page. Four books about intabulation and composition for the organist. Book 3 is on the modes, and contains a short treatment of the 12 modes that is a condensation of information from Zarlino 1558. Diruta attaches particular importance to the direction of melody as a modal characteristic. Book 4 contains examples of hymn and magnificat settings in all available modes, and some text on the plainchant modes. An appendix to book 4 lists organ registrations for each mode (p. 22).

The first treatise is about the true modes -- the ancient ones -- and their use in modern compositions, which are often discussed in detail (pp. 75-177). The first discourse 'Dell'inutile osservanza de' Tuoni, ò Modi hodierni' (pp. 234-51) mentions madrigals from Palestrina's Le vergini as examples (pp. 250-51). The other parts do not discuss the application of the modes to polyphony.

The general part discusses definition, formation and number of modes, the recognition of the modes from beginning, middle (ambitus and repercussion) and end, and transposition. The specific treatment of each mode gives the species, the ambitus and psalm tone formula, and ends with a polyphonic composition.

There are numerous references to the modes connected with cantus firmus and imitation in Lectio 5 (pp. 143-279); fundamental discussion on pp. 221-31. Since there are only 6 species of the octave (pp. 143-44), there can only be six modes. Study of Zarlino, Bononcini and Berardi could not convince the author of the existence of significant differences between authentic and plagal compositions. The 6 modes are illustrated with a cycle of 3-part fugues (pp. 159-68); a number of other examples are also given a modal designation.

It contains a cycle of lute pieces, formally in Zarlino's 12-mode system (with Dorian on C), although a number of modes are represented in an anomalous way. Each mode is preceded by a drawing by Abraham Bosse depicting its affect. There is no illustration for mode 8 and no music for mode 5. The prologue gives some explanation of the illustrations. The `Sonnet to the Book' mentions the 12 modes, and `Accords' for all modes were added in a later hand.

Preface signed in Freiburg im Breisgau, 1547; the text was finished in 1539, the last music examples were added in 1540. The principal aim of the work is to introduce the 12-mode system, but there are several sections that concern other issues. The traditional 8 modes are discussed in chaps. i:11-15. In chaps. ii:1-27, the 12 modes are derived from the 7 octave species -- Glarean's ordering of the modes begins with Hypodorian, the first mode deriving from the first octave species A-a, and ends with Hypoionian, deriving from the seventh species g-g'. All examples in book 2 are monophonic, but there are a number of references to polyphonic works. The chapters which follow discuss exceptional ranges in terms of modal mixture (chaps. ii:28-35), displacement of the modal octave (chap. ii:36), and the species of fifth or fourth for melodies with a range that is smaller than an octave (chap. ii:37). The polyphonic application of the modes follows in chaps. iii:13-25, which is richly illustrated with printed compositions.

The 12-mode system is discussed in chaps. 6-8 and 11. Further, chap. 5 mentions the tenor principle (p. 32) and chap. 9 postulates a relationship between fugal subjects and modes. The modes have two purposes: to provide norms to music and to represent the human affects. The latter is the subject of chap. 11, which moreover illustrates the modes with a number of chorales and polyphonic compositions, and gives a 2-part example for each mode.

Reprinted in 1588 and, altered, as Hoffmann 1605. Hoffmann cites Glarean 1547 repeatedly as an authority. The first 6 chapters treat definitions, origin, number and types, transposition, and recognition of the 12 modes; the last and longest chapter discusses each mode separately, under 9 different headings. The last of these is examples in choral and figural music; there are around 50 examples of each type. Further, Hoffmann refers to 5 cycles.

Dedication signed in Rome, 8 December 1649. The principal technical discussion of the 12 modes is in chaps. iii:17 (formation of the modes) and v:7-8 (mainly transposition and cadence dispositions). Book 7 mainly treats the modal affects (pp. 552-55 and pp. 569-77). The examples on these last pages, including the cycle of short 4-part pieces derive from Rodio 1609, though the text of this section contains no clear borrowings from this source. Kircher discusses stylus metabolicus or change of mode through change of scale on pp. 672-75; works of a number of recent composers are mentioned (3 fragments are given a examples). These composers seem to have been inspired at least in part by Doni's theories (Doni 1635). The modes also have a part in the system of automatic composition that Kircher expounds in book 8. Here and in other places, many examples carry a modal designation.

Composed before 1590, probably in Paris. The preface to this cycle of 12 French psalms through the 12 modes (in Zarlino's new ordering) mentions the affects of some of the ancient modes. Though it is implied that these are present in the psalms as well, Le Jeune applied numbers, not the classical names, to them. One reason is `to eschew ostentation', the other is the `diversity of opinions on these names'.

Eulogy on music read at Cracow, 1528, extensively quoting from classical sources; it is followed by a treatment of elementary theory in an equally classicizing manner. Discussion of the modes on fols. d7v-d8r and e2v-f7r; it is cast in speculative terms, clearly deriving from Gaffurius 1518, without any description of scales or other technical issues. Nevertheless, the modes are each illustrated by a four-part Magnificat setting. The example for the tonus peregrinus follows at the end of a section in which the modes interrogate the peregrinus one by one; the answers are mainly quotations from the Bible about pilgrimage.

Letter signed in Rome, 15 October 1684; containing Liberati's answer to a letter by Persapegi, in which he asked a judgment of 5 compositions submitted in the competition for the post of maestro di cappella at the Dome of Milan. A quick survey of the afterlife of the Greek genera and modes leads to the surprising conclusion that there is no certainty in music and that one has to trust one's ears (pp. 14-17). This point is further illustrated in many ways, for example by an outline of the history of music, mentioning among others Ockeghem and his Missa cuiusvis toni (p. 21; after Glarean 1547). Persapegi has an outspoken preference for Palestrina and the Roman School; concerning the mode this means that it should be selected in accordance with the text, and that no transgression of modal limits are allowed; many moderns are ignorant of the latter (p. 37). His preference for the third contestant (pp. 57, 60-61) is partly the result of this.

Dedication signed in Brunswick, 1 September 1592; the disputation on the modes was completed on 28 October 1592. An altered second edition appeared in 1611. Treatment of 12 modes in chaps. ii:5-23, using Glarean's nomenclature, though Mixolydian and Hypomixolydian are called Mixoaeolian and Hypomixoaeolian, respectively. The modes are ordered in a descending sequence, starting with Phrygian and ending with Hypolydian. Therefore, the 6 modes that have the semitone on the same degree in the species of fourth and fifth come first, then the others. The modes with the semitones in the lowest positions come first in each group. For each mode, the species in natural and transposed form, a canon, a chorale or plainchant melody, and a list of monophonic and polyphonic examples is provided. After each modal pair, Magirus likewise discusses the connection of the two modes, but with no list of polyphonic compositions. Chap. ii:28 demonstrates the ambitus of the voice parts in polyphony, and chap. ii:29 emphasizes the importance of modal cadences, without specifying these. The disputation (pp. 115-56) is a defence of Magirus's treatment of modes, and discusses whether knowledge of the modes is necessary (mentioning its rejection for polyphony by some), the number of modes, their order, and why treatment of psalm-tone differences is unnecessary.

Treatise about polyphony in 3 parts, the last of which contains information about the modes. A composition must be in one key, and this is done by not changing its `air', which the ancients called `modes'. Morley refers to Boethius and Glarean for an explanation of mode. Specific instances of such airs are the eight `tunes' or psalm-tones, all of which are illustrated by a short 4-part example. The `Annotations upon the Third Part' discuss the 12 modes after Glarean, and also mention Zarlino 1558 and Zacconi 1592 as important text about the 12 modes.

Much space is devoted to the differences between the 8 regular modes and the psalm tones, for each of which there is a 2-part cycle of examples. The 12-mode system is mentioned but hardly discussed (pp. 120-21). About 65 compositions are mentioned, most of these exemplifying cadences on particular scale degrees, both the usual and the unusual ones.

For each mode a 2 or 3-part canon is printed, and a list of chorales and polyphonic compositions. The ambitus of the polyphonic voices is discussed in the section on mixed modes that follows the discussion of the individual modes. There is also a cycle of canons in mixed modes, but no other polyphonic works are ascribed to these modes. No mention is made of the role of the modes in composition.

Chap. 8 of this schoolbook is about the modes, but they are already mentioned in connection with solmization in chap. 4. The treatment is elementary and often concerns psalmody. Rhau applied the modes to polyphony, as in some of his examples, but he also describes judgment of polyphonic modes by the solmization syllable of the final only, thus reducing the number of polyphonic modes to four. There are two four-part psalm-tone cycles.

Chaps. ii:5-10 contain a discussion of the 12-mode system that is clearly based on Glarean 1547, whose treatment of modal affects is summarized in chap. ii:6. Dressler 1561 is quoted in the treatment of the rules for the recognition of the mode in chap. ii:7. In chap. ii:10, Schneegass describes the psalm tones (tropi); he regards those that do not end on the modal final as corrupt. Many chorales are listed as examples for the modes; some of the modal characteristics are illustrated in a cycle of 2-part canons by Avenarius. The additional material at the end of the book gives a rule for the principal cadences of the modes (fol. g2r); the concluding Methodus, dated 13 August 1591, summarizes Schneegass's modal theory as point 4.

Dedication signed in Fürstenberg, 4 August 1624. Treatise in 2 parts, one about the 12 modes, the other about composition. Chaps. i:1-10 are about the modes in general; chaps. 1:11-24 are about the 12 modes and Glarean's 2 rejected modes. For each mode a number of chorales or plainchant melodies and polyphonic compositions are cited as examples. There are no monophonic examples for mode 6, and no polyphonic examples for the rejected modes. Several complete cycles are mentioned in part 1. In part 2 the modes appear again. Chap. ii:3 mentions the tenor principle. Chap. ii:5 discusses mode as the `foundation of composition', exemplified by a series of 12 melodies in tenor range and mensural notation. Clefs are given for all voices, and interval species for tenor and bass. Thüring also mentions the similarity of modes 1 and 9, 2 and 10, 5 and 11, and 6 and 12. Chap. ii:12 contains a series of general rules for composing; one of these mentions the importance of the modes.

Dedication signed in Leeuwarden, 24 March 1618. Contains a treatment of the 12 modes, following the German model (pp. 40-83). Mode 13 and 14 are rejected as `whore-children' (p. 41). The table of the modes on pp. 50-51 gives no full scales, only their species notes and the third above the final. With the exception of modes 3 and 4, these are also the cadence tones. The same table also lists the modal affects. The modes are exemplified by a cycle of 2-part canons.

Dedication signed in Venice, 4 October 1622, written at Pesaro. Consists of 4 books; book 1 is a recapitulation of Zacconi 1592. The modes are discussed in chaps. i:40-54. The most important addition is an elaboration of the influence of the psalm-tones on the modes (chaps. i:52-53). Zacconi makes a distinction of modes as scalar constructions, of which there are 12, and as manners of singing, of which there can be 16 or even 18. A number of compositions are mentioned in these chapters; further, there are 2 examples of improvised counterpoint using Magnificat intonations on pp. 122-25 and 2 short examples with a modal designation on p. 223. Chap. iii:61 contains Diruta's cycle of duets, with a comment on the tenor principle. There is no further information on the function of the modes in counterpoint.

Privilege of the Signoria of Venice dated 16 October 1557. Reprinted a number of times; from 1573 onward with slightly altered contents. Part 4 discusses classical, plainchant, and polyphonic modality; part 3 (chaps. 10, 26, 30, 39, 40, 57, 58, 77) contains some additional information. The 12 modes defined by Glarean are used for plainchant and polyphony, but according to Zarlino these differ from the classical modes. The relationship of the modes of the individual voices and that of the whole composition is discussed in chap. iv:31. Zarlino mentions several modal characteristics, among which the cadences are the most important: these are illustrated by a cycle of 12 two-part compositions. Further, c. 70 polyphonic compositions are listed, in addition to numerous plainchant examples. Several examples from part 3 have a modally labelled cantus firmus.
