A regular day in Karthaus

The village community building (Dorfsgemeinschaft Haus) comfortably accommodated all the summer school activities. On a regular day, lectures started at 8.30AM and lasted until lunch time (13.00). After a three course lunch, the afternoon was spent making exercises and doing a computer project. Eleven groups of three and one group of two students were each assigned a computer project and supervised by one of the lecturers. The results of the projects were presented on the last day of the course.

The complete programme, containing a list of the topics of the projects, is available as a PDF.

In their spare time, the participants enjoyed the different outdoor pursuits that the surroundings of Karthaus have to offer. Many went for a hike to the Kreuzspitze (2484m), a mountain top south of the village. Just below the summit an enormous cross has been erected, visible from the village. The walk could be done in anything between 56'44" (2005 record of Thomas Reerink) and three hours. Some students played football and also the sauna was regularly visited. The day was concluded with a five course dinner and drinks at the hotel bar.

On Sunday, all the students and staff went on an excursion.

Musical events

On Saturday evening, Hans teamed up with Sammie to play some tango music. Although a combination of guitar and oboe may not seem very obvious, the music sounded heavenly and created a wonderful ambiance, especially when a technical problem killed the lights.

Another tango event was organized on Tuesday after the evening lecture. Lecturers and students danced to tango music, brought by Hilmar.
