Musical evenings

After Hans Oerlemans' arrival to the summer school we had the first musical evening Saturday, and after the goodbye-dinner on Friday we had the second.

The first music evening started with the brilliant performance of some Astor Piazolla tangos by Jakob on violin and Hans on guitar. After this, Andrew sang some (folk) songs for us, while standing on the table (and amazingly enough not hitting the ceiling). Then, Hans played us some more songs on his guitar. The performers had now set a high standard which would be hard to meet on the second evening.

However, some students accepted the challenge, and decided to write a song about the summer school. The evening started with a very beautiful performance of Hans (on guitar) and Anne (on violin). Then, Andrew got up the table again and he sang us a few Karthaus songs, of which the lyrics can be found here:

Then Christo and Martin sang the student Karthaus song accompanied by Anne on violin and Jonathan on guitar. After this, Pippa played a very beautiful piece on the piano (which she has composed herself).

We've all come to Karthaus for a holiday,
We ended up learning about the SIA,
Equations got quite ugly, they made no sense to us!
None of us quite get it but I think Ed Bueler does.

It's kept Andrew Fowler, frozen to his bed,
Mass balance was positive, I don't mean to be rude,
But if you cannot handle it then Richard eats your food.

All except for Dorthe who felt she had to run,
Hans came to replace her, he brought us this guitar,
The tango was so awesome it kept Hilmar from the bar.

We've all come to Karthaus, to see firn densify,
The Knödels were far denser than models could imply,
Katharina served them gracefully, it took her quite a while,
Ernesto is still hoping that one day she will smile.

We've all come to Karthaus, with sheep and leather pants,
The locals seemed quite friendly, until they made us dance,
Dorthe claims there's ice in space, now that seems pretty far,
Really all you need to do is take the cable car.

Violin solo

We've all come to Karthaus, to learn ice properties,
All that we've discovered is it melts in G & T's,
There are loads of glaciers here in South Tirol,
They're just not that interesting, they're extra-tropical.

We've all come to Karthaus on a holiday,
By tomorrow morning we'll all have to go away,
Thank you to Hans Oerlemans for organizing this,
But two guys sleeping in one bed is something I won't miss.
