Semantic Building Blocks for Declarative Virtual World Creation
Creating virtual worlds for serious games and simulations in the traditional way is a laborious and error-prone process. Automation of the generation and placement of all sorts of objects in the world can be significantly improved by declaratively combining semantic modeling techniques with existing procedural methods. Among other advantages, this allows for a convincing and natural distribution of objects in the virtual world, as well as for a much more intuitive way of creating, manipulating and maintaining the virtual world itself. In this regard, most current tools for virtual world creation are still lagging. Based on the expertise gathered within GATE's WP 1.2, this project will provide semantic modeling techniques and put them to work in concrete virtual world creation settings. These techniques and methods will likely be combined with the concept of ‘building blocks' used by re-lion in Lumo Builder, their WYSIWYG virtual world modeling system. This will typically include the integration of concepts as semantics-based automatic generation of layouts of objects and real-time maintenance of virtual world semantics, with the goal of enabling non-experts to easily create large virtual environments.
